Demons at the Door: Faith and Mental Illness in Communities of Color

For many people of color, faith and mental health are inextricably linked. The Biblical faith woven into the fabric of ethnic culture has long been credited for preventing depression, addiction, and suicide, even under the worst life circumstances. When mental illness does strike, people of color more often use faith to both explain and respond. In most cases neither ministers nor mental health professionals are equipped to translate Biblical concepts into the language of mental illness. This 3-part seminar aims to bridge that gap.

Session I: Biblical Foundations

We will explore the temptations of Christ in the wilderness (Matt 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-13) and Adam in the garden (Gen 3:1-6) to answer two critical questions:

  • What does the Bible teach us about mental distress?
  • Is there a relationship between the fall, sin and mental illness?

Session II: Mental Disorders

Having identified the scriptural truths that psychology seeks to describe, we will explain how Biblical principles translate to secular discussions about mental illness. We will clarify the difference between the brain and “the mind”. Next, basic brain and nervous system function will be described in a way that is easy to understand. Finally, we will offer an overview of the most common mental disorders.

Session III: Mental Health in Communities of Color

This session focuses on the greatest challenges to minority mental health including discrimination-related stress, violence and community trauma, and the mental disorders that men, women, and children of color are most often diagnosed with.
