The Impact of Stress on Pastors and Ministry Leaders

Stress in Christian ministry is real. 90 percent of pastors are working 55-75 hours per week dealing with congregant needs and administrative duties. Over time, this can result in burn out and unproductive outcomes. Recent research shows that 45 percent of pastors are leaving ministry early due to burn out and another 10 percent are having early cardiovascular events such as strokes and heart attacks. This does not stop with pastors. Ministry leaders at all levels of Christian ministry are impacted. Are you stressed in your current role in ministry? Are you having physical signs of stress? Dr. Barbara Hutchinson is the President and Managing Partner of Chesapeake Cardiac Care which provides cardiovascular and sleep care in Bowie, Md. She treats patients from all over the world and is one of the few doctors in the U.S. who is board certified in both cardiovascular disease and sleep medicine. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Hutchinson earned a B.S. in Chemistry at the University of the West Indies, a Ph.D. in Cardiovascular Pharmacology from Howard University in Washington, D.C. and an M.D. and Cardiology Fellowship from the University of Maryland in Baltimore, Md.
Dr. Hutchinson is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a member of the Academy of Cardiovascular Sleep Medicine. She is the past President of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Chair of the Board of the Association of Black Cardiologists and she currently sits on several medical advisory and non-profit boards.
